In the distant past, the Greeks called all foreigners ‘barbarians’ which means ’stutterers’ because they didn’t know greek.

That’s really interesting…
On a more positive note, in modern Greek, ’stranger’ (i.e. foreigner) also means ‘guest’ - hence the famous Greek hospitality.
